Choosing a good electrician
How to choose a good electrician and what to ask for
How to choose a good Electrician
We’ve all heard stories/experienced the rogue tradesman who rocks up at your home, promises to fix something and then makes the situation worse/does a poor job/charges too much money. These are the guys who take advantage of your electrical ignorance. So how can you spot a good Electrician?
Your electrician should be qualified and have insurance that proves they are qualified to carry out electrical work on your home or business. They should also be up to date with their industry, changes to regulations and legal requirements, and new techniques or technology. Ideally you want an individual who follows electrical work procedures, as set out by UK regulatory bodies. This will provide you with peace of mind that the work will be of a high standard and last for years to come.
An electrician who has a lot of experience will be able to offer a range of services, and be confident in handling any expected or unusual issues that appear. Ask for case studies, personal recommendations and testimonials that will give you proof that they can deliver. These can usually be found on their website, but also check out review sites – where other customers have taken time to give an independent review. Some electricians may even be happy to let you observe them at work on other projects.
A good electrician will usually have received good feedback from previous happy customers – ask for a reference or look for testimonials from other customers.
The quotation should be received before the works starts, and include estimated time and cost, in as much detail as possible. Your electrician should arrive on the agreed date and time, and let you know if there’s anything unexpected that will impact on that. Sometimes additional expenses or activities may happen, but you should be given a ‘heads up’ as soon as it becomes apparent. Anything that is hidden should be an indicator that the electrical contractor may not be trustworthy, and therefore their work may not be relied upon either.
You are paying for a service and need to be happy with the quality of work and conduct of your electrician. It goes without saying that a contractor should be passionate, take pride in completing the job for you and do it to the best of their ability. They should also communicate regularly with you to make sure you are satisfied with progress, be able to answer any of your questions and explain things in a way that you will understand. Basically, you should be happy to recommend them to others and call on them again when you need them.
